Grade 5

November was a busy month in grade 5. We finished our Egypt unit, our patterns unit in math and our focus on writing topic sentences. Students sculpted, wrapped, then painted their own Egyptian themed sarcophagus and wrote a variety of topic sentences to understand the writers purpose. As we move forward with December online, we will be improving our memorization of multiplication facts, taking a deeper dive into our word decoding strategies and making sure we remember our strategies for taking care of ourselves mentally and emotionally, as well as spreading respect and kindness in our family.

I hope everyone stays healthy and safe during this time. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, whatever they may look like this year. Spend quality time with your family. I can't wait to see you all in-person again in the New Year.

Hello from the Grade 5 class,

I am so impressed by how well all of the Grade 5’s have done adjusting to the changes that have occurred for the 2020/21 year. We have done lots of fun and exciting things in class this month. In October, we have been talking a lot about what it looks like to be respectful to ourselves and others. In Science, we have been looking at Weather. We explored various instruments that are used to predict and record weather, as well as what happens during various weather phenomenon. During Mi’kmaq language class we have been learning how to converse with each other and the meaning behind our flag. During writing, we have been discussing various forms of topic sentences in order to help us when creating and editing our news articles. Starting the last week of October, I will be making Fantastic Friday Phone Calls. I will be reaching out to the parents of 1-2 students each week to let them know the great things that their child has done that week. I look forward to sharing with you all. If you did not fill out the “Getting To Know Your Child” sheet from last month, I will be sending another home with your child so that I know the best way to reach you. Please fill it out and send it back with your child.

In November, the Grade 5’s will be studying the respiratory and digestive systems, exploring ancient societies and looking at patterns in big numbers.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to me.

We have had a great start to the school year in Grade 5 so far. We celebrated Nitap Day by planting seedlings outside with the grade 6’s. We also made beaded bracelets and discussed the requirements of a good friend.

In October, we will be studying the effects weather has on our climate, learning about the Treaties and digging in to what each side agreed to within the agreement. We will be looking at what we can do to decrease our stress and anxiety levels during health class. After the passed 6 months it will be more important than ever that the students are able to relax and reduce stress. The Grade 5’s will be learning about what it takes to create a newspaper and using this knowledge to create their own newspaper articles. We look forward to sharing them with you later in the semester.

It's that time of year again. I hope you all had a safe and fun March Break/Summer.  I have been busy getting our classroom set up for you all to come back. The last few months have been hard on everyone, but we are all in this together. I can't wait to meet you all and welcome you to our room. The school will look a little different than when you left, but we are all working hard to make sure it is the safest environment that we can make it for you.

My name is Ms. Rae, I will be your Grade 5 teacher this year. In our class this year, we are focusing on keeping a healthy mind and body. The beginning of the year, we will focus on getting back into the school routine and all the new changes. This year, Grade 5's will need to wear a mask on the bus, in the hallways, and any time they are in the classroom not at their desks. I have the desks spaced out so that they will have an opportunity to take their mask off during the day. We will be having recess and lunch in our classroom.

I welcome parent communication and am here to address any concerns for this coming year in Grade 5. Feel free to email me at

Hello Students, Parents, and Staff. This has been a strange school year...strangest one I have seen! We had a great time while we were in school. The grade 5/6 class got to go on many field trips this year that included seeing The Nutcracker, going to the Discovery Centre and seeing the Egyptian Exhibit in Halifax. We worked so hard this year and reached many personal milestones. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again and having another great school year beginning in September! Love, Ms Helena <3

Hi Students, Parents, and Staff!

I hope everyone is staying safe. I know this is a confusing and scary time but we are all in this together. We are bigger and better than this virus and we're going to beat it!

I post the work for the week on the grade 5 and 6 Google Classrooms on Sunday's. It is usually a mix-up of work to be completed on an app and work to be completed on google docs and shared with me.

I miss everyone and can't wait to see you guys again *heart*

Ms. Helena

Hello everyone! We had a busy March in grade 5/6. We were busy working on our science fair projects, doing experiments and our boards. We had a bunch of great ideas and I hope we will be eventually able to present. I know this has been a scary and stressful time for everyone. I’m hoping everyone stays well and I can’t wait to see everyone when are back to school!

Hello Parents, Guardians, and Staff,

It has been a busy February for the grades 5/6 class! We have been working on science fair experiments, research, and science boards. It's exciting to see these young minds hard at work. We have also been working on narrative stories using the writing process and typing up our finished products. The grade 5 students have been learning about ancient Egypt and were able to see the Mummy Exhibit at the Museum of Natural History in Halifax. The grade 6 students have been learning about the history of Africville, geographically and what happened to its residents. In Math, we have all been learning about decimals, decimals, and more decimals! We hope you had a great February and an even better March!

Hello LSKers!  We have survived another freezing January!  January was busy for the grade 5/6 with getting back to routines and school.  The grade 5's have started an Ancient Egypt unit in Social Studies, while the grade 6's have been learning about Nunavut.  In Math, for both grades, have been decimals, decimals, and more decimals!  Science has us getting ready for the Science Fair in March.  We are busy finding topics and researching our science experiments.  In Language Arts, we have been poets all month long  with learning different types of poetry, why we write poetry, and how to get our creative juices flowing.  February is a short month but we are going to jam pack it with fun and learning!
